Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

One of our clients is taking on the technical challenge to amend enterprise data and network security from within. For the last twenty years, they have always been building teams together within the area, building top-class network and communication technology companies, some of which have sold for hundreds of millions. As an organisation, our client knows how to challenge and disrupt a technology market, expand quickly, and enjoy every minute of it along the way.

They are looking for intelligent infrastructure engineers with broad industry experience to join them in their next venture of building new Artificial Intelligence technology.

General Challenges

You will be responsible for generating, handling and supporting the company's IT and infrastructure needs. You must take care of everything from email and Wi-Fi to build systems and git hosting. Manage the infrastructure across cloud on AWS, Azure and vSphere. Adopt a security first mind-set across everything you do.

As an Infrastructure Engineer, you must be a passionate individual, you will have no fear, be self-assured in all of your approaches and methods, to jump into the whole technology stack. We also want someone who is not committed to using ordinary types of tools, but one that will be effective and use the correct tools for the work they're doing. You must take pride in your work, ensuring that you make things better than the state you initially found them. You should show interest in building software, and have commitment to writing airtight tests as you are to make new features. You get utmost thrill, from using chaos-engineering principles to make the entire system robust.

  • Great academic results from a leading university- but not necessary if you can prove to reveal some serious qualities and be able to get everyone across your entire enterprise on board quickly.
  • You want a career where your creative abilities will make a difference to the world of technology and be part of an impressive R&D environment.

General skills and experience required:

You will demonstrate a good knowledge of networking. Have thorough experience managing Linux and Windows systems. Familiar with the continuous deployment mind-set and applying test-driven development to infrastructure.

Good understanding of scripting languages including:

  • Bash
  • Python
  • Go

Experience with Infrastructure as Code and tools:

  • Terraform
  • Puppet
  • Ansible
  • Chef

Cloud Engineer L1 & L2

  • £30000 - £50000 per annum 15% bonus

Our client a leading Cloud Hosting provider based in Hertfordshire are rapidly growing and looking for experienced Cloud Support Engineers to join their Operational team. You will work alongside VCP certified Engineers supporting a variety of clients managed cloud services hosted in data centres across the South East. This client is a big believer in personal development for their Engineers, you will get relevant courses fully paid for e.g. VCP or JNCIA.

The Job

  • You will work 3 days in the week and 2 days on the weekend with a financial uplift
  • Our client is looking for both 1st and 2nd line Cloud Engineers
  • The Cloud Engineers have overall responsibility for the delivery of technical projects, including delivery of new technical services and provisioning of customer services.
  • You will also take an active role in delivery of the Service Desk where customers interact by phone, email and a web portal.
  • This person is also an escalation point for technical issues arising from the 24/7 service desk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in problem management at 2nd/3rd line escalation.
  • Be an authority for the change management process.
  • Engage with 3rd party support suppliers to ensure OLA's that underpin customer SLA's are maintained.
  • Ensure customer technical documentation is maintained.
  • Manage scheduled maintenance tasks.
  • Manage technical risks to customer platforms.
  • Involvement in the planning and provisioning of new services.
  • Prepare & present migration plans to senior staff
  • Ensure the systems are running at peak performance levels and are maintaining a high level of availability.

Key Skills

  • Experience supporting Microsoft Server or Linux OS
  • Proven track record in delivering IT solutions within a Managed Service environment
  • Experience delivering and building virtualised platforms
  • Experience supporting shared storage infrastructure
  • Experience with scripting languages (PowerShell, Perl, PHP, VBScript etc.)
  • Experience supporting backup technologies
  • Experience working with ITIL based service desk

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with vCloud Director & vSphere
  • VMware Certified
  • Experience supporting databases (MS SQL server, MySQL, Oracle or other)
  • Understanding of DoS/DDoS attacks and mitigation techniques
  • Experience of supporting an enterprise monitoring and alerting platform
  • Experience of designing and maintaining disaster recovery solutions

  • Effectively develop test automation scripts at different test levels
    • Assist in designing and creation of test harnesses
    • Reproducing defects and help the team investigate escalated issues
    • Assist development of bug fixes, bug isolation, and resolution
    • Writing test cases; automating test cases within existing framework
    • Create test plans based on requirements and effectively estimate tasks/projects
  • Develop and execute test strategy (plans, cases, etc.) for assigned features
  • Log test results, write bug reports and maintain schedules for assigned features and functionality

Required Skills

  • Self-motivated and flexible to changing tasks that may require learning new skills
  • Experience with a high level programming language (preferably Python)
  • Able to work well as part of a team or independently as needed

  • Analyze requirements, design, document and create automated tests for production level code
  • Assist in the agile planning activities by breaking down epics and providing estimates for stories and tasks

  • Experienced in high level programming: e.g. Python, Java
  • Knowledge of scripting languages: e.g. Perl, Bash
  • Database knowledge and experience: e.g. MySQL
  • Data storage and retrieval strategies including BigData project solutions
  • Understanding of security concepts: encryption, secure application development, defensive programming, software vulnerabilities and exploits, general issues in web security
  • Demonstrate experience developing and using RESTful API interfaces
  • Public Cloud development and technology solution integration (AWS)
  • Knowledge of Cloud technologies and networking concepts (HTTP, SSL, TCP/IP)
  • Experience of operational monitoring tools: e.g. Datadog, Prometheus
  • Development experience on a Linux/Unix platform

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools and software pipelines
  • Docker containers
